FABRICATION SPECIALTIES / CUSTOM METAL ENCLOSURES

Custom Metal Enclosures: Protect the equipment. Plan the access.

Bring equipment dimensions, access requirements and operating conditions together in a clearly specified metal housing. Plan the shell around the components it contains and the people who maintain them.

FUNCTION / FIT / FINISH

Define the part in its working context.

An enclosure brief starts with the internal working envelope, not just the overall size. Allow for connectors, cable bend space, removable components and the tools needed for service. Identify how the enclosure attaches to its supporting frame and how covers open or lift away.

Material and finish should reflect exposure, cleaning and appearance. Carbon steel may suit coated indoor housings; stainless steel or aluminum may be considered for other environments. These are selection options for review, not a declaration of an electrical, ingress or hazardous-location rating.

APPLICATIONS

Where the scope begins.

01

Equipment housings

Sheet metal shells and removable covers coordinated with equipment interfaces and maintenance clearances.

02

Instrument covers

Panels with defined cutouts, viewing apertures and fixing patterns for integration by the project team.

03

Service cabinets

Storage or equipment cabinets with shelves, access panels and hinges specified around the intended use.

DESIGN / PROCUREMENT

Resolve the details before fabrication.

01

Access and hardware

Define removable or hinged panels, opening direction, captive fasteners, locks and hardware supply. Check access with nearby equipment in place.

02

Heat and exposure

Provide heat dissipation and environmental requirements. Vent openings, seals and drainage need coordinated design; adding openings changes protection.

03

Approval boundary

If NEMA, IP, electrical or other approvals are required, identify the exact requirement and who will test or certify the finished assembly. Fabricated sheet metal alone does not establish a rating.

QUOTE PREPARATION

Build a complete enclosure brief.

01

Envelope and interfaces

Provide internal and external dimensions, mounting positions, door clearances and equipment drawings.

02

Cutout schedule

List openings by face and revision, with tolerances and hardware datasheets. Separate future cutouts from openings required now.

03

Finish and assembly

Specify visible faces, coating or grain direction, supplied components and whether the quote covers an empty shell or mechanical assembly.

QUESTIONS / ANSWERS

Before you specify.

Are custom enclosures automatically IP or NEMA rated?

No. State the required rating in the brief. Design, sealing, hardware and any testing or certification must be separately confirmed for the complete assembly.

Can the enclosure have ventilation slots?

Identify airflow and protection requirements together. The location and shape of openings must suit the equipment and the required environmental performance.

Can you provide only the sheet metal shell?

An empty shell can be defined as a separate scope. List which hardware, wiring, seals and internal components are supplied or installed by others.

How should I specify a visible stainless finish?

Identify the required finish, grain direction and visible faces. Where appearance is critical, agree a sample and acceptance criteria before release.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Bring your custom metal enclosures brief.

Include the component name in your project title, then add drawings, quantities, finish, delivery location and required dates. The quote link selects the relevant fabrication service.
