CAPABILITIES / FINISHING

Finishing: Specify protection and appearance together.

A finish needs a defined substrate, environment and acceptance standard. Colour alone does not describe the protection or appearance a component requires.

Abrasive finishing of a welded stainless steel frame

CONTEXT / REQUIREMENTS

Understand the role in fabrication.

Finishing can include surface preparation, coating, polishing or treatments appropriate to the material. The sequence should account for welds, inaccessible areas, threaded features and assembly interfaces.

Carbon steel often needs corrosion protection; stainless steel may need post-fabrication cleaning or a controlled decorative finish; aluminum may be coated or anodized where suitable. These are process options for review, not a statement that every treatment is available for every component.

APPLICATIONS / COMPONENTS

Where it fits the project.

Examples for scoping a project. Final suitability depends on the design and operating conditions.

01

Coated supports

Prepared and protected steel assemblies for a specified exposure.

02

Architectural faces

Visible metal surfaces controlled by agreed samples and grain direction.

03

Cleanable stainless parts

Surface treatment and weld finishing defined by the application.

04

Finished aluminum panels

Appearance and handling requirements coordinated with alloy and geometry.

SPECIFICATION / REVIEW

Design considerations that shape the process.

01

Define the system

State substrate, exposure, preparation, treatment and acceptance criteria. Identify who specifies the system.

02

Mark exclusions and masks

Identify threads, bonding points, sliding fits and surfaces that must remain untreated.

03

Agree appearance review

Use suitable samples and define visible faces, lighting or viewing requirements where relevant.

CONNECTED PROCESSES

Complete the fabrication scope.

QUESTIONS / ANSWERS

Before you specify.

Can a finish correct poor material selection?

It may provide protection, but the substrate, exposure and design still need to be suitable. Crevices, damaged coatings and inaccessible areas can affect performance.

Why does masking need to be specified?

A coating or treatment can alter fit, electrical contact or thread function. Show the interfaces where finish coverage must be controlled.

DEFINE YOUR PROJECT

Put finishing in the project brief.

Include the application, drawings, material preferences, quantities, delivery location and schedule. Identify inspection and installation requirements for review.
