CAPABILITIES / FORMING & BENDING
Forming & Bending: Shape the part around its final fit.
A formed component needs clear reference dimensions and a feasible sequence. Connect the drawing's final geometry to the material and tooling considerations.
CONTEXT / REQUIREMENTS
Understand the role in fabrication.
Forming changes metal geometry without removing the entire shape from a solid block. Press-brake bending is commonly used for flanges, channels and brackets; other forming approaches may suit curved or more complex work.
Thickness, grade, temper and rolling direction influence bendability. Inside radius, flange length and nearby features affect feasibility. Allowances used to develop a flat pattern should be agreed with the forming approach rather than assumed to transfer between setups.
APPLICATIONS / COMPONENTS
Where it fits the project.
Examples for scoping a project. Final suitability depends on the design and operating conditions.
Channels and angles
Open sections for supports, edges and mounting assemblies.
Returned panels
Enclosure or architectural panels with stiffening and attachment flanges.
Multi-bend brackets
Parts with several interfaces and a sequence constrained by tool access.
Formed transitions
Project-specific shapes with joint and assembly details defined.
SPECIFICATION / REVIEW
Design considerations that shape the process.
Dimension the finished part
Identify inside versus outside dimensions, reference faces, angles and required radii.
Review the sequence
Return flanges, close bends and holes near bend lines can constrain tooling and order of operations.
Protect the surface
Specify visible faces, grain direction and acceptable marks before forming prefinished material.
CONNECTED PROCESSES
Complete the fabrication scope.
QUESTIONS / ANSWERS
Before you specify.
Why can the same bend behave differently in another material?
Strength, ductility, thickness and temper affect forming and springback. A material substitution can require a different radius or sequence.
Should the flat pattern control the final part?
Supply the required finished geometry and clarify which drawing controls. Review any supplied flat pattern against the actual forming assumptions.
DEFINE YOUR PROJECT
Put forming & bending in the project brief.
Include the application, drawings, material preferences, quantities, delivery location and schedule. Identify inspection and installation requirements for review.
