CAPABILITIES / CUTTING
Cutting: Define the profile before the process.
The outline is only part of a cutting specification. Edge condition, critical features and the operations that follow determine how a blank should be prepared.
CONTEXT / REQUIREMENTS
Understand the role in fabrication.
Cutting separates sheet, plate or sections into blanks and profiles for further fabrication. Laser cutting, sawing and other cutting methods suit different material forms and geometries; the appropriate route is reviewed against the part.
A cut edge may not be the final functional surface. Identify holes requiring machining, weld-preparation areas, visible edges and parts that will be bent. Material utilization should not override grain direction or fit requirements.
APPLICATIONS / COMPONENTS
Where it fits the project.
Examples for scoping a project. Final suitability depends on the design and operating conditions.
Profiled blanks
Flat components for brackets, plates and custom assemblies.
Panel openings
Access and ventilation features coordinated with the finished enclosure.
Section preparation
Member lengths and end details for frames and support assemblies.
Nested parts
Repeated profiles with controlled orientation, quantities and identification.
SPECIFICATION / REVIEW
Design considerations that shape the process.
Geometry and files
State units, revision, material form and thickness. Supply closed profiles and a dimensioned reference; flag critical features.
Edge and surface condition
Describe burr removal, cosmetic faces, weld preparation and any machining allowance.
Downstream fit
Identify bend lines, datum faces and assembly interfaces before cutting the blank.
CONNECTED PROCESSES
Complete the fabrication scope.
QUESTIONS / ANSWERS
Before you specify.
Is laser cutting always the right process?
No. Product form, material, thickness, geometry and required edge condition guide selection. The cutting route must be assessed against the scope.
Can cut holes be used as finished interfaces?
Some may be suitable; others need machining or another secondary operation. Identify which dimensions are functionally critical.
DEFINE YOUR PROJECT
Put cutting in the project brief.
Include the application, drawings, material preferences, quantities, delivery location and schedule. Identify inspection and installation requirements for review.
